Abstract

A condensed abbreviated injury scaling (CAIS) chart (based on AIS-80) has proven valuable for early prospective clinical injury scoring. Following publication of the 1985 revision of the abbreviated injury scale, this chart has been revised. Two single-page charts have been developed - one for penetrating - one for blunt trauma. To evaluate their accuracy and the ability of emergency medical and surgical residents to appropriately score patients soon after admission, 337 patients admitted to a level I trauma center following blunt (262 patients) and penetrating (75 patients) trauma were studied. Scoring errors related to construction of the charts occurred in 1.2 percent, human inaccuracy or omission resulted in errors in 11.6 percent. Although still subject to human error, the availability of simple charts with the potential for accurate scoring should allow further refinement of the process of early prospective clinical injury scoring.
