Abstract

During the interval 1985-1989, all crashes were evaluated with regard to injury occurrence and distribution. Data was compared with that collected from 1981-1984 and with statistics for passenger vehicular crashes. From 1985-1989, there were 367 crashes which resulted in injury to 38 drivers. 29.2% sustained head; 31.1% lower extremity and 27.1% upper extremity injuries. Crash to injury ratio was 9.7 for racing compared to 11.4 for highway. Injury was more prevalent at high speeds, but crashes only slightly more frequent than at low speeds. Injury patterns show a definite trend away from those involving the axial skeleton and torso.
