Abstract

Accidental injuries are the seventh-leading cause of death among older persons in the United States. Leading mechanisms of accidental injuries in this age group include falls, motor vehicle crashes, auto-pedestrian injuries, and fire-related injuries. This article describes ways of thinking about injuries, common mechanisms of injuries, assessing older persons for risk of injuries, and practical interventions to help prevent accidental injuries.
