Abstract

In this article, five cases of incest in girls of the post-adolescent period have been presented and focuses on the reactions of each girl to the incest situation. Indulgence in incest in the post-adolescent period leads to serious repercussions in the girl, even in an environment in which the moral standards are relaxed. Even though the individual may have been promiscuous with other men, she reacts to incest as if it were socially condemnable and begins to feel guilty toward her mother. This is no doubt related to the death wishes against the latter which are inherent in the incestuous relationship. The attempt to break away from incest leads to very forcible types of reaction, the individual nature of which depends on the predisposition of the personality and the relative strength of the ego and super-ego. This promiscuity increases the girl's feeling of guilt so that she finally must give up even such substitute forms of gratification or be prepared to endure ostracism from the fold. Only one of the five girls could be said to have worked out a satisfactory adjustment, while the others manifested various degrees of distortion of the personality. The severity of the taboos which society has erected against incest has undoubtedly contributed to the nature of the reaction. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
