Abstract

Several studies have shown a link between internalizing and externalizing behaviours in youth and psychological violence in their family. However, the nature of this link has not been extensively addressed in the literature. The objective of this study was to verify the strength and direction of the links between the manifestations of young people's internalizing and externalizing behaviours and the adoption of psychologically violent parental practices. The sample is made up of 143 parent-child dyads who were met on two occasions, a year apart. The parents completed a questionnaire on their child's internalizing and externalizing behaviours whereas the children, aged 9 to 12 years, completed a questionnaire on the frequency of psychologically violent parental practices. The path analysis reveals that psychologically violent parental practices are associated, a year later, with symptoms of anxiety and depression in preadolescents. The results also reveal that aggressive child behaviours in T1 are associated with psychologically violent parental practices in T2. This study brings to light the stability of psychologically violent practices and of internalizing and externalizing behaviours in preadolescents. Further studies will be required in order to substantiate the findings on the bidirectionality of links between these variables. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
