Abstract

Starting from the observation that violence against prison guards is mainly treated in a statistical and a purely descriptive way, the authors, guided by their practice as psychologists among this workforce, try to provide a broader perspective of the issue. Violence, as a component of the prison environment, can be heard in the speech of guards in symbolic elements relating to professional identity, recognition, narcissistic and representational foundations, etc. The effects of violence have consequences on their job performance (occupational illness, discourse of suffering, feelings of loneliness, etc.). This article attempts to examine the expression of violence in prison in the dynamics of human relations and collective institutional referents, while maintaining a clinical perspective with regard to the prison guards.
