Abstract

Discusses 3 historical discussions of suicide in psychoanalytic settings. A 1910 discussion about child suicides at the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society, discussions surrounding the Freudian hypothesis of the death instinct, and psychoanalytic discussions about personal anguish, acting out, and the transition to the suicidal act are described.
