Abstract

Hating the patient is seen as a natural part of any psychotherapeutic practice. Its emergence may be related to work with difficult or demanding patients. It finds its roots in our own personalities and the unconscious motivations that led each of us to practise psychotherapy. Some defences against the emergence of hatred are examined, and situations are discussed in which defences may break down and acting out occur.
