Abstract

Presents in detail the case of a 51-yr-old woman of well-to-do economic condition who was caught shoplifting from a large store during an attack of depression. Melancholic dysthymia seemed well-supported as a diagnosis. Several interpretive hypotheses are presented about the origin of stealing as a depressive symptom, the most attractive one indicating its equivalence to suicide.
