Abstract

Reviews questions that should be addressed to determine whether a psychiatric patient should be hospitalized, including the nature of the illness, symptoms to be treated, and who requested the hospitalization. Different categories of patients encountered in psychiatric facilities are discussed in terms of the channels through which they were committed and the pathological behavior they exhibit as a crisis reaction to their environments. It is concluded that psychiatric hospitalization is necessary for emergency intervention; however, it should be one among many rather than the primary treatment for mental illness.
