Abstract

Investigated the relationship of perturbations of the hypothalomo-pituitary axis with suicidal behavior by administering the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) to 51 attempted suicides on the day of their hospital admission. No correlation was found between DST result and type of suicide attempt. For this population, the DST's predictive value was absent. In addition, no correlations were found between alcoholism, repeated suicide attempts, or suicidal behavior rating scales and DST results. It is suggested that drug interference effects and stress might explain the present findings. (Dutch abstract) (27 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
