Abstract

Each state in the US was classified on the basis of the homicide and suicide rates into violent, nonviolent, inwardly violent, and outwardly violent groups. Social differences between these 4 groups of states were identified. Data indicate that those states high in both suicide and homicide tend to be in the south and west, with large populations and urban areas, tending to be socially unstable and less religious. The usefulness of this type of regional analysis is discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
