Abstract

The spiritual dimensions of gatherings of women, particularly those with a dedication to something beyond the self, are explored. Women's groups are argued to be a potentially valuable resource for therapy as they provide a safe place where the "feminine principle" can be honored and reclaimed. The paper employs an experiential learning model and uses stories to illustrate key points. Storytelling as prayer is analyzed as a vehicle for healing, developing, and transformation within each woman and the larger community. Three types of stories-Medicine, Teaching, and Stories of Power-are described along with three supportive functions women's groups play.
