Abstract

Qualitative interviews were conducted with four counselors to explore reasons why sexual abuse therapy centers are rarely accessible to disabled survivors.

FINDINGS suggest that these counselors have a limited definition of accessibility that does not include doing outreach or working to reduce their own disablist perceptions. Exploring further revealed that these counselors lack knowledge about disabled women's lives and needs and lack feelings of interest or responsibility about becoming more accessible. Reasons identified by the counselors for not making more of an effort to provide services to disabled women are compared with discriminatory reasons used to withhold services from women in general.
