Abstract

One psychotherapist describes the complex matrix of learning, loss, emotional price, and intense connection experienced in over two decades of working with large numbers of clients who were dying. This article offers a look at one psychotherapist's spiral into depression as the difficult aspects of the work take over and her subsequent movement back to former functioning. The notion of expanding the walls of the psychotherapy office to include others in the work such as members of family of origin, partner in a primary relationship, extended family and close friends, is explored.
