Abstract

Presents a case in which electroconvulsive shock therapy (ECT) was used safely and effectively to treat a 59-yr-old man who was hospitalized for depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. The S had large neurosurgical defects of the cranium and small pieces of shrapnel in the zygoma and neck. Theoretical considerations of current pathway in ECT suggest an alteration through the brain when the skull is deformed, but this does not appear to affect clinical outcome. Skull defects are not a contraindication to ECT, but the defects should probably be avoided when administering the electrical stimulus. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
