Abstract

Depressive disorders in patients with tumor disease are common. Owing to the possibility of symptom overlapping, the establishment of the diagnosis can prove difficult. The investigation of suicidality has a particular role to play, since the it may fluctuate greatly in this constellation of illnesses, and, overall, is very common. To date it is not clear whether psychological disorders are a risk factor for the development of malignant diseases. In principle, the spectrum of therapeutic options is virtually unlimited. However, possible contraindications associated with the underlying malignant disease must be carefully considered. All in all, establishment of the indication for psychopharmacological, psycho-/socio-therapeutic management should be liberal. In view of the reduced life expectancy of cancer victims, the highest priority must be given to improving the patient's quality of life.
