Abstract

At the primary care level, depressive states are common, often severe, and possibly even life-threatening, illnesses. Early identification is important if we are to reduce unnecessary suffering, progression and chronification. The detection rate can be improved by screening and active investigation. The Competency Network on Depression and Suicidality is an email-based consulting service (www.psychiatriekonsil.de) available to physicians, psychotherapists and pharmacists, which provides advice, free of charge and anonymously, to all those seeking support on depressive or other psychiatric illnesses.
