Abstract

This article is derived from a summary of the available research evidence published in the December issue of Effective Health Care (NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, 1998). It aims to help nurses understand patients who present after deliberately harming themselves and explains why their problems should be taken seriously and what interventions are most likely to be effective.
