Abstract

100 heroin dependent individuals and 100 normal controls constituted the sample of the present study. All were Saudi Arabian males. The two groups were properly matched for age. Suicidal feeling questionnaire was carried for both groups. Previous attempted suicides were clarified. All the heroin dependent individuals were subjected to a structured questionnaire to determine the reasons for dependence. The dangerous physical effects of the heroin taken according to the opinion of the heroin dependent individuals were clarified. The aim of the study is an attempt to find an aetiological relationship between suicide and heroin dependence. The results show the association between heroin dependence and suicidal behaviour. But the relationship is not simply an aetiological relationship, it includes three frameworks; heroin dependence as a cause of suicide, as a form of suicide and as manifestations of a common aetiology
