Abstract

The authors apply strict biostatistical methods in their analysis of numerous cases reported by the Department of medico-legal and sociosanitary sciences of the University of Siena concerning deaths occurring during the period from 1936 to 1991 as a result of the effects of exogenous toxics. The analysis is systematically backed up by anatomo-pathological, histological and toxicological researchs. The results reveal an interesting analogy with the statistics published to date and provide an interesting picture of the basic trends in the effects of exogenous toxics. This picture has directly evolved from cases of murder and suicide to cases involving accidents and addiction, and from the inorganic quality of poisons to the predominance of complex chemical bodies produced both by the laws of progress and by new social pathologies.
