Abstract

There has been an insidious rise in the annual number of school aged children who commit suicide in this country. In the absence of official guidelines for EPs to consult on their involvement in such cases, it is suggested that SPSs discuss and develop their own protocols. Information from the literature is presented as a basis upon which (para)suicidal behaviours may be considered. Five possible areas for EP contributions are suggested with reference to relevant recent studies. These include; understanding (para)suicidal behaviour; the assessment of risk; breaking the cycle of parasuicidal activity; helping schools cope after a pupil's suicide and working preventatively with schools. It is suggested that EPs are well placed to help schools with what must be one of their most difficult and emotive experiences. © 1991, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. All rights reserved.
