Abstract

From 1983 till 1988 1.851 persons with alcohol problems were recorded by the emergency ambulance department of the Altenburg district, Saxonia. 735 persons consulted the emergency ambulance more than once. By dividing the alcohol problems in to subgroups (alcoholism, intoxication, drunk driving, suicide, casualty, assault, alcohol related illness) great differences were detected for the time-related frequency of each group. Specially the cases of alcoholism and of alcohol related assault increased by more than 300% Extent of alcohol abuse appears to be also connected with sex, age, type of school, working place. No direct relation could be found between overall alcohol consumption and development of alcoholism in the district.
