Abstract

According to Beck's cognitive theory, hopelessness is the key variable linking depression to suicidal behavior. Previous work on the relationship between depression, hopelessness and attempted suicide is reviewed. Fifteen depressed in-patients were commpared to 15 hospitalized suicide attempters. Subjects were assessed on 2 self-report measures (BDI, HS). No significant difference between the 2 groups were observed on the BDI. On the other hand, significant difference between the 2 groups were observed on the HS. Some practical and theoretical implications are discussed.
