Abstract

Allgulander C. Occurence of the anxiety syndrome and possible consequences of absent or inadequate treatment. Anxiety syndromes have many disguises in the primary care setting. They are conducive to suicide, cardiovascular deaths, secondary alcoholism, and impaired psychosocial functioning. The anxious patient who ventures to seek a physician in spite of the mistrust spread by the mass media against medical treatment deserves an empathic and professional reception. More research is needed into the long-term effects of pharmacotherapy in chronic cases. © 1990 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.
