Abstract

1. The authors believe that pathological gambling is a disease that requires treatment and of which the cause is unknown. The aim of strict abstinence in treatment is successful, as follow-up studies have shown. 2. Most of the gamblers are young, often criminalized, highly in debt, in danger of committing suicide and susceptible to other drug substances, especially to alcohol. 3. The separation of gamblers in groups of alcoholics during residential treatment has proved to be useful. 4. Our pragmatic therapy of addicts by treating only symptoms was also succesful with gamblers. 5. The outcome of treatment is roughly that of alcoholics.
