Abstract

The use of antidepressants as agents of suicide or attempted suicide is reviewed in the light of the increasing range of agents on the market. Although the data show that tricyclic antidepressants are toxic in overdose, this aspect may have received relative over-emphasis when the benefit derived by patients from these drugs is considered. The most important aim of medical practitioners is the prevention of suicide by the identification and management of the at-risk patient.
