Abstract

A subject with an acute psychological crisis experiences a definite breakdown of his emotional balance, which is not merely individual, but very often is associated with a decompensation of his microsocial context. The Psychiatric Emergency Unit of the University of Milan provides guidance for different strategies of intervention. Therapeutic strategies are directed both at individual intervention and family intervention. Family therapy seems to promote a change in the prospective with which families are accustomed to facing their problems, in order to build up and promote a new relational reality. A clinical case showed relatives' group intervention is intended to strengthen the capacity for communicating feelings and to the underlying emotions. This lead to the modification of the dysfunctional components (Criticism, Hostility, Emotional Overinvolvement), the improvement of empathic understanding of the behaviour of the patient and to more effective transactions. The organization and the major themes dealt with in this model of the intervention showed.
