Abstract

Collective despair, or collective lack of hope, will lead us to coWective suicide. This type of suicide can take manyhms, foreshadowed by many possible signs: identuy crisis, loss of p, wry kind of dependence, denial ofow customs and traditwns, degradatwn of ow environment, weakening ofow lunguage, abandonnent of our struggle for ow Aboriginal rights, o w autonomy and ow c h, un caring acceptance ofvblence, passive ackmwle of lack ofwork and unemployment, corruption of ow morals, tolerance ofdrugs and idleness7 parental swrendering of responsibilities, lack of respect for elo!ers, envy of those who try to keep their heads up and who might succeed, and so on. © 1996, The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
