Abstract

At the Psychiatric Department of the University of Pisa, there was a study aiming to evaluate the biological, psychological and psychopathological characteristics of a group of suicide attempters. These were assessed by means of several questionnaires and rating scales (HAM-D, SAD, QTA, etc.) in order to explore their psychological and psychopathological features. In particular the authors isolated from the entire sample a subsample of alcohol abusers in order to verify if the psycho-biological characteristics of these subjects were in some way different from those of suicide attempters without alcohol abuse. The results of the research show primarily the existence of a wide correlation between alcohol abuse and suicidal attempt, whereas, it does not seem that alcohol abuse increases depressive symptomatology; secondly the results show that aggressiveness seems to be strongly influenced by alcohol abuse and finally that the facilitating action of alcohol abuse on attempting suicide is different in the various mood disorders.
