Abstract

The author presents the question of suicide in the elderly, reporting to Durkheim's classical work. Shows the international and Brazilian epidemiology and the need for further studies in this field. The traces of people with risk of suicide are painted as well as the neurobiology and psychodynamics of this act. Relates the main treatments now used in depressed patients with high suicidal risk and indicates some preventive techniques of suicide that weigh up the life of old people.
