Abstract

We describe an attempted suicide of a 40-year-old man by using an oleander brew. Clinical, we found mainly cardial dysrhythmia up to intermittent anteriorventricular blocking of third degree. Extensive gastrolavage, intermittent use of pacemaker, and use of digitalis antidot quickly led to clinical improvement. Intoxications by compounds of oleander are mixed intoxications by different natural glycosides. The clinical signs of such an intoxication are equivalent to that of a conventional digitalis preparation. The therapy of digitalis intoxications including administration of digitalis antitoxin are discussed.
