Abstract

Quaternary ammonium drugs, muscular relaxants suxamethonium and pancuronium, are sometimes examined in forensic laboratories in the cases of suicide or homicide. It is difficult to extract these drugs from biological samples using organic solvents, because of their water solubility. These drugs are not volatile so that their gas chromatographic (GC) and gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) analyses are difficult in their underivatized forms. In this paper, we have reviewed analyses for quaternary ammonium drugs by GC, HPLC and GC/MS.
