Abstract

A set of social indicators for the American states in 1980 was subjected to a factor analysis, and seven factors identified. One, measuring social disintegration was consistently associated with suicide rates by sex, age, marital status and race, but not by method, lending some support to Durkheim's theory of suicide. A second factor, measuring a southern subculture, was consistently associated with homicide rates by sex, me, marital status, method and age, supporting Gastil's theory of murder. © 1995 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
