Abstract

Exhaust gases which have been subjected to catalytic conversion are non-hazardous when mixed with air. However, death can occur if the effluent is permitted to collect in a confined space, as exemplified by the passenger compartment of a domestic motor vehicle. This report describes the changes in the atmosphere of a car following the diversion of catalytically converted fumes into its interior. An irrespirable atmosphere will result from the accumulation of carbon dioxide with displacement of oxygen, but only after a protracted interval. © 1995.
