Abstract

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for adolescents aged 15-to-24. The rate of completed and attempted suicides could be reduced by training teachers, counselors, and students to recognize those who are high risk and immediately responding by implementing both prevention and postvention strategies. Prevention strategies include identifying warning signs of suicidal behavior, referring to trained personnel, and teaching alternative coping techniques. Postvention strategies are directed toward sharing information, expressing feelings, and identifying those who are most vulnerable for suicidal actions. © 1994 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
