Abstract

Illicit anabolic steroid use is a major national health problem that is increasing steadily, especially among adolescent males. Anabolic steroids have been linked to several serious and potentially life-threatening medical conditions, including malignancies and depression-mediated suicide. Furthermore, mounting evidence suggests that even brief use is associated with a prothrombotic state that may culminate in venous and/or arterial thromboembolic events, including pulmonary embolism, stroke, and acute myocardial infarction. Long-term use may cause accelerated coronary atherosclerosis.
