Abstract

This retrospective study examined factors which may help predict an adolescent patient being discharged against medical advice (AMA) from a psychiatric hospital. There were 187 patient's records studied over a three year period with 26 patients found to have been discharged AMA. When compared to controls, factors found to be significant in helping to predict adolescent discharge AMA included a pattern of parents not holding the adolescent responsible for behavior, a history suggesting parental psychopathology, separation problems between patient and parents and parents taking die patient's side against staff in disagreements. Trends seen included a history of marital discord and adolescent patients having attempted suicide. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
