Abstract

HIV positive patients attending the Nice Emergency Medicine Department were prospectivelly enrolled in a six month survey. They were compared to HIV negative patients. 318 HIV positive patients were included (1.1 p.cent of the admissions). They were young (mean age: 29.7 ± 4.7 years), with a sex ratio of 2/1, most frequently intravenous drug addicts, and in HIV disease early stages (67.7 p.cent in CDC stages II and III). Clinical features were: neuropsychiatric (40.6 p.cent), traumatologic (18.5 p.cent), respiratory (8.9 p.cent), suicide attempt (5.9 p.cent), fever of unknown origin (4.3 p.cent) and miscellaneous (22.4 p.cent). 5.6 p.cent of all veinipunctures and/or perfusions and 1.4 p.cent of all injections, sutures, and wound dressings were performed in these patients. 43.9 p.cent were admitted, 48.2 p.cent were dischanged at home, 7.6 p.cent escaped or declined admission against medical advice. One died in the emergency room. These patients represent an heavy, and probably increasing, load in Emergency Departments. Nosocomial risk should be carefully evaluated. AIDS education should be an important part of the Emergency Department activities. © 1993 arnette S.A.
