Abstract

Tracing the debate on the relation between anomie and alcoholism back to Durkheim as a master of sociological thought and to his study of 'suicide' (1897) there will be analyzed: Durkheim's concept of alcoholism as 'normal' and deviant behavior; Durkheim's concept of anomie; the situation of anomie in Eastern Germany in 1989/1990 during the process of social change as a great societal transformation; the rising rate of alcohol-consumption, i.e. spirits, in Eastern Germany.
