Abstract

The topic addressed in Lewin's paper 'On Chronic Suicidality' is an important one. Those who work with individuals suffering from severe and prolonged forms of mental illness face daily the clinical problem of suicidality. Most vexing for these practitioners is the ebb and flow of chronic suicidality so often manifested among patients suffering from severe personality disorders. As highlighted by Dr. Lewin, clinicians working with such patients are prone to overreact in response to the frustration and fear that this symptom engenders in caregivers, or to underreact in an attempt to deny the dangerous reality that these patients present.
