Abstract

The authors first mention data about the epidemiology and biology of suicidal behavior. They then cite articles related to the triggering or intensification of suicidal ideation/behavior due to the use of antidepressant drugs and briefly relate the hypotheses that might explain this paradoxical effect. They conclude that no association has been proved thus far between the development of suicidal ideation/behavior and a specific type of antidepressant and discuss the implications in clinical practice. Finally, based on the data in the literature and on their own clinical experience, they propose guidelines for therapeutic approach to be used with suicide-prone patients.
