Abstract

The frequency of suicidal behaviour in the general population in France in considerably higher than that in Egypt. To investigate the frequency of such behaviour in a sample of psychiatric patients, all patients admitted to a French and an Egyptian hospital during a one month period were screened for suicidal behaviour. In the French patients, the frequency of suicidal behaviour was found to be greater, with more violent methods used, and more frequent positive family history for such behaviour. This high frequency can be attributed to the absence of a "collective ego" and a greater sense of individual liberty
