Abstract

There are some risk factors for suicide such as psychiatric disorders like depression, schizophrenia, etc. One of this factors is acceptation and unemployment. Some studies have shown that physicians and medical students are in higher risk for suicide than others. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence of suicidal ideas and suicidal attempt in medical students of Mashhad University of medical sciences. In this study, 200 medical students of Mashhad university of Medical Sciences in winter of 2004 were asked to fill general health questionnaire, scale for suicide ideation [SSI] and demographic questionnaire. Anxiety and somatization were higher in female students than male and in basic sciences students the rate was higher than externs and interns. In studens with pervious or present suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety and somatization were also found more than student without this thought. No significant difference between suicidal ideation and attempt in junior and senior students was found. In this study found that risk of psychopathology in junior students was higher than senior students and pervious studies in other countries have shown this result. Risk of psychopathology also higher in female than male
