Abstract

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of motivational interviewing (MI) on the levels of depression and suicidal ideation in patients with depression.

METHODS Tolly 120 cases of depressive patients with suicidal ideation were randomly divided into intervention group and control group , 60 cases in each group. All the patients took antidepressants. The control group was in accordance with routine nursing , and the intervention group was in accordance with routine nursing and motivational interviewing. The Hamilton depression scale ( HAMD ) and the self-rating idea of suicide scale ( SIOSS ) were used for the assessment of both groups before and after intervention. The incidences of suicidal behaviors were compared.

RESULTS The scores of the HAMD and the SIOSS showed no significant difference before and 12 th week after intervention , the scores of the HAMD and the suicidal ideation and the SIOSS of the intervention group were significantly lower than that of the control group ( P<0. 01 ).

CONCLUSION Motivational interviewing can reduce the levels of depression and suicidal ideation in the depressive patients. It plays a positive role in the prevention of suicidal behavior.
