Abstract

The removal of life support in the wake of a suicide attempt poses both legal and ethical challenges. Below is the case history and discussion of a middle-aged man who attempted suicide, developed a reversible medical complication which required intubation, and whose legally authorized representative (LAR) and family communicated that the patient would never have consented to artificial ventilation. An Ethics Consult was ordered on hospital day three to review the family's request to transition to comfort care. © 2022 Connecticut State Medical Society. All rights reserved.
