Abstract

Inspecțiune is one of Caragiale's most discussed texts. In this paper, I explore some possible sources of the enigma surrounding Anghelache's suicide. Suicide and its causes became a genuine subject of research in the second half of the 19th century. A new field of inquiry emerged then: moral statistics. Central to my discussion is one of Titu Maiorescu's articles, published in Convorbiri literare, in which he addresses that new way of investigating suicide, starting from Enrico Morselli's book, An Essay on Comparative Moral Statistics. It is plausible to believe that Caragiale had read Maiorescu's article. © 2022, Complexul National Muzeal Astra Sibiu. All rights reserved.
