Abstract

This article examines some possible 'interactions' between the Greek and Latin novel in relation to the Scheintod motif, sometimes connected with the attempted suicide of a character deceived by the false death. The episodes of apparent death in Petron. 94, Apul. met. 1.11-19, and Hist. Apoll ree. A 25-27 show similarities with Greek novels, but the topos was probably also attested in declamations, as can be deduced from Sen. contr. 2.2, so it is possible that it circulated in schools of rhetoric. © 2022 Universita degli Studi di Pavia, Facolta di Lettere.
