Abstract

No satisfactory account has been provided for the Varronis the(n)sauros mentioned by Decimus Brutus in a letter to Cicero (Fam. 11,10,5). In addition, Brutus's personality does not favour the hypothesis of a scholarly quote, the only possible explanation that has been seriously considered so far. By contrast, an old conjecture of Reid's (correcting to Verrinos thesaurus) gives perfect meaning, and sheds light on the last months of Verres' life, who committed suicide in December 43 according to the information transmitted by Seneca the Father and Pliny the Elder. © 2022 Museum Helveticum.
