Abstract

This study seeks to reflect on the issue of suicide related to the work, based on the phenomenology-hermeneutics in Martin Heidegger. Organizational psychology and psychiatry, adopting a technical-scientific position, analyse voluntary death related to work, sometimes from intrapsychic aspects, sometimes around the socioeconomic conditions involved in this field. In this way, they aim to focus on suicidal behavior, preventing its occurrence. Heidegger, who described the era in which we live as an era of technique, warns that this way of analyzing human behavior, planned and calculated, with a view to control, may be insufficient for a comprehension that meets what is in question for the person. This is because, since existence is fundamentally paradoxical, the scientific model can cover up the most specific meanings that occur in the person's relationship with his/her professional project, as well as the meanings involved in his decision for voluntary death. Based on phenomenological-hermeneutic psychology, it is necessary to let person's relationship with work show itself through the opening that is established, in a singular way, in the relationship itself, so that, thus, the meaning that is properly involved when a person thinks ending his/her own life may appear. © 2022 Instituto de Treinamento e Pesquisa em Gestalt-terapia de Goiania.
